- Aging Pipe Tobacco | Cedar Gems
Aging Pipe Tobacco Many kinds of pipe tobacco were created for immediate enjoyment after being tinned. This led manufacturers and blenders to be concerned about what happened after. Any pipe tobacco with a naturally high sugar content age wonderfully. Some pipe tobacco blends are specifically made for long-term storage, like Cornell & Diehl's Cellar Series. Benefits to aging pipe tobacco: -Blends with a significant component of Virginias develop added sweetness and complexity after a few years. -Many blends burn better with age compared to burns after being freshly tinned as starches convert to sugars and flavours marry together for a smoother smoke. -They say if you store two or more different pipe tobaccos together they will each absorb some flavour from the others thus creating a unique blend. The Aging Process aka "Cellaring" -The key to successful aging is an airtight container to prevent drying and to control the moisture and pressure, creating a slow, positive transformation. (mason jar, humidor, tupperware) This allows natural chemical changes to mellow and enhance flavour, aroma and burn quality. -Microorganisms and chemical reactions cause the tobacco to break down sugars and other compounds, leading to new flavor profiles over time.

Digital - press and hold the calibrate button until device reads 75% RH. Humidor Seasoning Steps Method 1: Fill humidifier with distilled water - Let soak for 10-15 minutes - Flip upside down to drain excess Activate 84% Boveda Close the humidifier and Boveda into humidor for 3-5 days. Method 2: Fill humidifier with distilled water - Let soak for 10-15 minutes - Flip upside down to drain excess Wet a new, unused sponge with distilled water - Use a clean Tupperware to put soaked sponge into humidor Close the humidifier and Tupperware into humidor for 3-5 days. Humidor should read high, around 85% RH. General Humidor Maintenance & Care Rotate Cigars. Rotate the cigars every 2-3 weeks, move the top to the bottom, and the bottom to the top. This prevents the cigars closest to the humidification source from absorbing too much and becoming over-saturated. Don't Overfill. For the best environment possible, only use 75-80% of the humidor's total capacity in order to ensure the air and humidity can circulate. Humidor Loosing Humidity 1 - Is your hygrometer reliable? Has it been calibrated? 2 - Does your humidor have a leak? 3 - Has your humidor been seasoned properly before general use? 4 - Ensure you don't leave the lid open unnecessarily. 5 - Has regular maintenance been done? 6 - Is the humidor's location suitable? Exposure to sun and heat will evaporate the humidity. 7 - How many cigars are being stored in the humidor? 8 - Were there any dried out cigars added? Dried out cigars will soak in more humidity and throw off the overall level of the humidor. Cleaning Humidor Mold 1 - Remove all cigars. 2 - Discard moldy cigars. Place any mold free cigars in an air-tight container with a Boveda pack. 3 - Discard humidification device and replace it. Doing this ensures the bacteria creating the mold is not being put back into the humidor. 4 - Thoroughly vacuum the humidor. 5 - Gently sand the interior where the mold has grown using #150 extra-fine grit. Wooden humidors have a thin wall of cedar, be careful not to sand too deep. If the mold is deep into the cedar layer, replacing the humidor may be a better option. Vacuum the humidor again when finished. 6 - Sterilize the interior with isopropyl alcohol, use just enough to wet the surface. The alcohol will kill any mold spores. 7 - Wipe down the interior again with 100% steamed distilled water, this will remove any alcohol that got trapped in the crevasses. Leave the humidor open for a couple days to fully dry. 8 - Re-season the humidor, following all steps as if the humidor was brand new. 9 - Once 70% RH is reached, wait a minimum of 2 weeks and monitor the humidor for any signs of mold growth. 10 - If the mold does not come back, return cigars to the humidor. It's a safer idea to put a fresh batch of cigars in the humidor, any cigars saved from the mold should be kept isolated to not reintroduce mold bacteria to the humidor. Boveda vs Glycol - Virtually effortless humidification system. - Expels humidity at a specific predetermined level. - 2 way system: Absorbs and releases humidity to meet the predetermined RH. - When the pouch is solid, replace it. - Can be used in a variety of humidifiers: foam based or crystal based. - Suggested option for crystal based humidification units, distilled water can lead to over-humidification. - Works to prevent mold and bacteria growth. - Mix with distilled water to provide the correct RH. Boveda RH Guide RH - Relative Humidity 62% - Benefits long-term aging, results in firm cigars. 65% - Best for long-term aging, results in slightly firmer cigars. 69% - Most popular, keeps cigars fresh. 72% - Compensates for moisture loss in traditional wooden humidors. 75% - Keeps cigars extra soft and combats less reliable seals. 84% - Only for seasoning a new humidor. Top of Page Mold or Plume Re-humidify dry cigars Aging vs Resting Dry-Boxing Cigars Flavoured v Infused Tips, Tricks & Information Cigars Did you know... Many cigar smokers intentionally let the ash build up because it helps insulate the burn and regulate the temperature. That’s why cigar ashtrays are large — ash isn’t trash until it’s ready to fall. Is it Mold or Plume? Mold - A green or blue sticky, pasty texture - Forms on the wrapper and foot - Does not brush off - Has a musty aroma Plume - White dots - Easily brushed off - A harmless sign cigars are aging correctly Re-Humidifying Dry Cigars 1. Use a Ziploc/Tupperware with a tight seal. 2. Introduce the cigars to a low level of humidity, 62% is preferred. 3. Carefully monitor the humidity with a hygrometer. 4. Increase the humidity every week, 62% to 65% RH. 5. Give the cigars time to acclimate to each RH increase. 6. Cigars will gradually soften. 7. Once the cigars have been in 69%-72% RH for a period of weeks, they are good to smoke. Aging Cigars Aging cigars is a deliberate process, with the intention and understanding that cigar flavours evolve and change over time. Oils from the binder, filler and wrapper tobaccos meld together over time and typically results in a more mellow flavour profile. How to age cigars: - 63-65% RH is common - Maintain the humidor - Rotate cigars on a regular basis - Leave at least 20% of the humidor empty for air and humidity circulation Resting Cigars Resting cigars is done for a period of days or weeks, long enough to let them acclimate to new humidor and home conditions. Doing this gives the cigars time to shed the residual taste of ammonia or other unwanted compounds that may surface after a cigar is rolled. What is Dry-Boxing a cigar? Cigars are placed in an empty wooden box over-night prior to smoking. This is a safe method to to fix over humidified cigars, and can improve the burn. Dry-box cigars for a maximum of 3 days. Flavoured vs Infused Cigars Flavoured Adding flavour to cigars is spraying the tobacco with flavored liquids, or by injecting them inside a rolled cigar. These liquids can be made from natural or artificial flavorings, and the process is much quicker than infusion. This is often used for mass-produced flavored cigars and tends to result in a stronger, more immediate flavor. Flavouring the Wrapper Some manufacturers apply flavoring to the cigar’s wrapper leaf. Some flavored cigars have a sweetened cap which can provide a pleasant contrast to the rich, smoky flavours of the tobacco. Infused Infused cigars are made by introducing the flavors during the curing or aging process, allowing the tobacco to absorb the essences over time. In some cases, the cigars may be aged in barrels that once held spirits like whiskey or rum. This process results in a cigar that offers a distinct aroma and taste, often with a milder tobacco flavor to allow the added flavors to shine.
