Aging Pipe Tobacco

Many kinds of pipe tobacco were created for immediate enjoyment after being tinned. This led manufacturers and blenders to be concerned about what happened after.

Any pipe tobacco with a naturally high sugar content age wonderfully. Some pipe tobacco blends are specifically made for long-term storage, like Cornell & Diehl's Cellar Series.

Benefits to aging pipe tobacco:

-Blends with a significant component of Virginias develop added sweetness and complexity after a few years.

-Many blends burn better with age compared to burns after being freshly tinned as starches convert to sugars and flavours marry together for a smoother smoke.

-They say if you store two or more different pipe tobaccos together they will each absorb some flavour from the others thus creating a unique blend.

The Aging Process

aka "Cellaring"

-The key to successful aging is an airtight container to prevent drying and to control the moisture and pressure, creating a slow, positive transformation. (mason jar, humidor, tupperware) This allows natural chemical changes to mellow and enhance flavour, aroma and burn quality.

-Microorganisms and chemical reactions cause the tobacco to break down sugars and other compounds, leading to new flavor profiles over time.
